Introduction to the Triangle Research Data Center

February 12, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 10:45 am

Introduction to the Triangle Research Data Center

The national network of Federal Statistical Research Data Centers provide authorized users with access to unique microdata* on health, demographics, and business activity from various Federal agencies (*data at the household and business unit level rather than aggregated to larger geographies or groups).  There are 29 locations across the country at many major research universities, so we are lucky to have one of these Centers in the Triangle.  The Triangle Research Data Center (TRDC) is administered through Duke University, but also supported by UNC at Chapel Hill and NCSU.

At this workshop Gale Boyd, Executive Director of the TRDC, will describe the diverse Federal data sets available through the network; how these data are used in research; and how to apply to the network (accepted projects may be carried out at any Center across the network).  These data sets cover a broad range of topics from demography to economics to health.  They may be used individually, or linked to each other or to researchers’ own data, so the possibilities are vast.

Since UNC at Chapel Hill supports the TRDC, use of the Center is free to Carolina researchers, a value of up to $15,000 per project.  The Center is located on Duke’s West Campus.  All researchers are welcome to come learn about the Center, although faculty and doctoral students are its main users since the approval time for projects can take up to a year.
