The “Survival Analysis for the Social and Behavioral Sciences” short course is an in-depth introduction to survival analysis: models for data where the response variable takes the form of a time to an event. Models for survival data — also known as “duration models” and “event history models” — have seen increasingly widespread use in the social sciences over the past thirty years. Modeling survival data presents a unique set of challenges. The course will concentrate on practical applications of models for survival data, including issues relating to data setup, software, and interpretation of model estimates. It will also address recent advances in survival analysis, including models for data with a cured fraction, repeated events, competing risks, and hierarchical/multilevel structure.
Prerequisites: Participants should be familiar with univariate differential and integral calculus, basic probability theory, and linear algebra, and should have completed Ph.D. level courses in introductory statistics and linear regression models. Familiarity with discrete and continuous univariate probability distributions will be useful, but is not required.
Software: The course is taught using R for all examples. There is also full support for participants using Stata and more limited support for those using other software packages.
